A local union wants to give a name to a park which honours people who have lost their lives or been injured while at work. The park area surrounding the United Steelworkers of America (USWA) monument, located near the entrance of the Flin Flon Trailer Court, currently has no official name. The local branch of the USWA has written to Flin Flon City Council requesting permission to name the park and place within it benches and/or picnic tables. "We would be responsible for the maintenance of the benches or tables, but would ask that the City continue to look after the grounds," read a letter from the union reviewed at Tuesday's city council meeting. The letter stated that the park would allow citizens to relax and remember friends and family who have lost their lives or been injured at the workplace. The letter also requested that the City consider changing the name of the portion of Tamarack Drive where the park is located. "To the best of our knowledge, this would not require a change of address for anyone, as there are no homes situated along this portion of the street," read the letter. Council referred the letter to the Parks and Recreation Commission and the Engineer Services Committee for further review. Each April, residents gather at the USWA monument to commemorate the National Day of Mourning in honour of those who have been injured or lost their lives at the workplace.
