Two males have been arrested after a man received what police called "serious, life-altering injuries" in a machete attack at Aspen Grove this week.

Around 3:30 p.m. Feb. 27, police were called to the apartment complex after receiving a report of a fight with a seriously injured person. Arriving on scene, RCMP found a man, only identified as a 19-year-old from Moose Lake/Mosakahiken Cree Nation, who was suffering from what police called "serious, life-altering injuries", having been attacked with a machete. Police did first aid and emergency medical services arrived on scene, taking the victim away for further treatment - RCMP say he remains in hospital in Winnipeg, where he was flown for treatment of his wounds.

The nearby Ecole McIsaac School, which was about to end classes for the day, was put into a secure and hold state while police sought the suspects.

RCMP determined the victim and two males had gotten into a fight at the apartment complex and the two males attacked the victim with machetes. All three people involved were residents in the apartment complex, said RCMP.

The two suspects were located at the complex. The suspects were identified as 19-year-old Darren Ballantyne and a 13-year-old male, both from The Pas - the 13-year-old cannot be identified as per conditions of the Youth Criminal Justice Act.

Both males were arrested and charged with aggravated assault and possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose. Ballantyne also faces five additional charges of failing to comply with a release order - the 13-year-old also faces an additional charge of failing to comply with a police undertaking. Both remain in police custody.

Ballantyne was injured in the initial fight and taken to hospital for treatment - after being treated, he was taken to the RCMP detachment.

No court dates have been announced for either of the two males arrested. None of the charges have been proven in court.
