Two people were arrested after an incident on Flin Flon's Main Street last week that led to a suspect being tasered by police.
The incident took place June 14 around 4:30 p.m., when RCMP officers on patrol performed a traffic stop on a vehicle on Main Street after spotting a person with outstanding warrants. The suspect, identified as 26-year-old Roger Custer, was also, according to police, sought in connection with a break-and-enter reported to RCMP earlier that day.
A pair of RCMP officers tried to arrest Custer, but while doing so, a 32-year-old woman, identified by police as Miranda Highway, ran toward police to try and interrupt Custer's arrest. Officers physically held Highway back, but while doing so, Custer rushed at the officers. A passerby recorded video of the arrest, which happened in the middle of Main Street.
A third RCMP officer was called to the scene to assist, leading to a taser (referred to by RCMP as a conductive energy weapon or CEW) being used to attempt to bring Custer to the ground. Custer fell after being hit with the taser, leading to his arrest.
Custer faces charges of assault causing bodily harm, two counts of assault on a police officer, assault with a weapon, mischief under $5,000, break and enter and resisting arrest. According to Manitoba RCMP, Custer has been remanded into custody awaiting a day in court - Custer's first date is currently unknown.
Highway was also arrested following the incident and faces two charges each for assaulting a police officer and resisting arrest. She was also, according to police, remanded into custody.
The three officers involved in the arrest suffered minor injuries - Flin Flon RCMP are still investigating the incident.
Video shot of the arrest and circulated on social media shows Custer shirtless pushing one of the officers over another officer and Highway, who were entangled on the ground. Shortly after, the taser is deployed, hitting Custer, who then fell to the ground and was arrested. RCMP officers had blocked off the street with service trucks to keep vehicle traffic away from the arrest.
None of the charges have been proven in court.
