Twelve candidates announced for Flin Flon election

There will be at least one familiar face on Flin Flon city council amidst what could be a shakeup of councillors after the general municipal election next month.

Flin Flon Mayor Cal Huntley had no challengers when candidates were announced on Sept. 18, and will continue to serve as mayor for another term.

A dozen people will vie for six councillor seats. Current councillors Tim Babcock, Karen MacKinnon, Colleen McKee, Ken Pawlachuk and Guy Rideout will seek reelection while Coun. Bill Hanson will not.

Other candidates include Colleen Arnold, Joe Buie, Alan French, Thomas Heine, Dave King, Jordana Oulette and Patricia Sattelberger.

Eight candidates will seek to be elected to the board of trustees for the Flin Flon School Division, including current trustees Tim Davis, Leslie Fernandes, Amy Sapergia Green, Angela Simpson and Murray Skeavington. Jill Akkerman, Leslie Power and Ebony Trubiak will also campaign for seats.

Advance polls will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 17 from 8 am to 8 pm at Flin Flon City Hall. The general election will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 24 from 8 am to 8 pm. Generally, residents who live below Ross Lake will vote at Northminster United Memorial Church. Residents who live above Ross Lake will vote at Flin Flon Community Hall.

To be eligible to vote, residents must be at least 18 years old, a Canadian citizen, and a resident of Flin Flon for at least six months. Voters must bring photo ID to the polling station.
