Sightings of foxes, owls and bears aren't uncommon in the Flin Flon area, but turtles... well, they're another story. So it's no wonder that Wendy Garuk was more than a little taken aback to spot one of the four-legged reptiles during a recent visit to the rifle range along the old Highway 10. "We were practicing range and my dad (James) looked, and there was a turtle," said the teen. "I was kind of surprised. I didn't know we had turtles here." Wendy said her friends were just as surprised and added that "they thought it was pretty cool." The creature has stayed with the Garuks since being found, but, at the recommendation of a zoo in Winnipeg, the family planned to release it back into the wild last night. Based on some research, the family believes the reptile is either an eastern painted turtle or a western painted turtle. Debbie Hiebert, president of the local SPCA, said she only knows of three or four people who have found turtles in the bush of the Flin Flon area. "Not very many people find them," she commented.
