There's no assurance from the province that the tuition freeze enjoyed by Manitoba's post-secondary students will continue this fall. In a recent interview, Advanced Education Minister Diane McGifford would not confirm the continuation of the freeze, which was put in place when the NDP took office in 1999. The perceived indecisiveness prompted a reported 500 university students to march on the streets of Winnipeg last week to demonstrate both their support for the freeze and their desire to see post-secondary education be made free like the kindergarten to grade 12 system. According to the Canadian Federation of Students, the average Canadian student now pays $17,000 to obtain a four-year undergrad degree. That price tag does not include books or living expenses, states the federation.
