Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s new cabinet has two Flin Flon-Snow Lake connections.
Catherine McKenna, the new minister of environment and climate change, is married to Flin Flon native Scott Gilmore.
Gilmore, who has been profiled in The Reminder in the past, is a respected social entrepreneur and writer. He was born in Flin Flon and retained close ties to the community after leaving as an infant.
McKenna is the rookie Liberal MP for the riding of Ottawa Centre. A human rights lawyer, she took the seat in the Oct. 19 election by defeating NDP incumbent Paul Dewar.
Also part of Trudeau’s cabinet, named Wednesday, is former part-time Snow Lake resident MaryAnn Mihychuk.
Mihychuk, who once served as Manitoba’s mines minister, is the new minister of employment, workforce development and labour. She is MP for the Winnipeg riding of Kildonan-St. Paul.
