Despite the smoky, yellow air, area residents and visitors kicked off the summer with the annual Flin Flon Trout Festival.
Main Street was busy with food vendors, amusement park rides, games and craft booths as festival-goers made their way up and down the street.
Live entertainment kept people busy, with magic demonstrations, a hypnotist and local music.
Dressed in the theme of decades – the Trout Festival theme for the year – Mark and the Knopflers took to the main stage Saturday afternoon for what was expected to be the annual battle of the bands.
As the only band entering the contest, the group – made up of Stefano Strapazzon, Shaun Strom, Zach Rainville and Dylan Grove – performed a number of songs.
Good food, great friends and live music was the hit of Main Street on the smoky Saturday afternoon.
Earlier in the day, the Lions Club held a Skateboard and BMX Competition at the Flin Flon Skatepark as spectators grabbed seats on the bleachers and the rocks surrounding the park.
New this year was the family dance at the Creighton ball diamond. Live entertainment kept children wide awake with a dance-off competition giving out serious prizes.
Hollie Clark earned herself a new bicycle for her dance to Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.”
Later in the evening, fire spinners took to the dirt portion of the ball diamond to impress a late-night crowd.
The festival once again proved that weather isn’t an obstacle for Flin Flonners as events were well attended and enjoyed.
Results
The duck races returned after taking a few years off.
Jennifer Danieluk was the big winner with her first-place duck reeling in $300. Second place went to Rod Weseen, for $150, and third place went to Dianna Brooks for $100.
The Lions Skateboard and BMX Competition had a less-than-hoped-for turn out, but once again offered plenty of skills.
In the 12 and under BMX category, Jaert Osika placed first with Brian Dyck and Blake Davis claiming second and third place,
respectively.
Hayden Ulrich took first place in the 13 to 17 BMX category, with Marcus Brooks in second place and Chris Ringrose in third.
It was close between Jared Bradt and JP Parker in the 13 to 17 skateboard category. Bradt earned himself the first-place title.
Cole Zoerb ranked first in the 18 and over skateboard category, with Cahlin Jesso and Logan Beheyt following close behind in second and third place.
