According to a new survey conducted by the Better Sleep Council Canada, one in ten Canadians (10%) report they always have trouble sleeping at night. "Many Canadians aren't sleeping well at night," comments Cecil Brauer of the Better Sleep Council Canada. "A healthy lifestyle isn't complete without a good night's sleep. Secrets to a Successful Sleep The Better Sleep Council Canada reminds Canadians to make the most of their sleep and closely evaluate the quality and quantity of sleep each night. Follow these simple guidelines to a good night's sleep: - Understand your internal clock - Everyone's body requires a certain amount of sleep to re-energize and feel well rested. If your body is getting the sleep it needs, you should feel fully alert and well rested the next day. Most adults need between 7-8 hours of sleep each night. - Evaluate your sleep setting - We spend one-third of our lives sleeping, but many Canadians neglect to evaluate their sleep environment. A mattress and foundation provide optimum service for about eight to 10 years of nightly use. After that, your body's needs have changed and so too has the comfort and support of your mattress. - Make sleep a part of your healthy lifestyle - A good night's sleep is a major component to healthy living. The amount and quality of sleep you get directly affects your health and well-being. Without a good night's sleep, your mood, energy and productivity are all at risk. Other interesting results from the survey include: - One in ten Canadians (10%) always struggle for sleep; another 19% report sleep trouble once or twice a week. And more than one third (39%) battle the zzz's every couple of weeks. - Canadians aren't sleeping well at night, with more than one-third (38%) saying they rarely or never wake up well rested after a night's sleep.
