More buses?

With local transit company Northern Bus Lines no longer offering charter services, trustees voted to direct their strategic planning committee to study possible alternatives.

The committee will now consider the possibility of purchasing additional minibuses or a larger transport vehicle, said Trustee Murray Skeavington, board chair.

Skeavington said the lack of service from Northern Bus Lines
means the schools must contract buses out of The Pas or elsewhere for student trips.

Special guest

Superintendent Blaine Veitch spoke on a visit to Many Faces Education Centre by Flor Marcelino, Manitoba’s minister of multiculturalism and literacy.

Marcelino, a Winnipeg MLA, was at Many Faces on Monday afternoon to tour the school and meet with students and staff.

Marcelino’s department funds the evening program at Many Faces.

Marcelino also took time to visit the Community Adult Learning Centre, located in the lower level of the Co-op.

Slow down

Skeavington implored motorists to drive with caution in school zones, saying he recently spotted a vehicle zip past Hapnot Collegiate at an estimated 70 km per hour.

“We don’t want to see any kids getting hurt,” he said in delivering his chair’s report.

Skeavington said safe driving is especially important at the start and end of the school day as well as over lunch hour.

He added that the board will be asking the city to lower the speed limit in all school zones to 30 km per hour.

Nice work!

Veitch commended maintenance and custodial staff for their work at the schools over the summer.

Work completed included new windows at Hapnot and Ruth Betts Community School, an office reorganization at Many Faces and extensive interior painting at École McIsaac School.

Other upgrades are scheduled but have yet to begin, including the removal of a gym apparatus from Many Faces.

Busy place

Veitch touched on some of the many student activities taking place at Hapnot, including clubs for yoga, video game players and even teens who like to sew.

The superintendent also congratulated the Hapnot Kings and Kweens soccer teams on winning a tournament in Neepawa earlier this month.

Happy anniversary

Skeavington urged anyone interested in French immersion to attend an upcoming celebration to mark the 30th anniversary of the program in Flin Flon.

The event will take place Oct. 2 at the Flin Flon Community Hall. The evening will include presentations by French immersion students, teacher recognition awards, live music, a silent auction and refreshments.

Skeavington added that organizers are hoping for a packed house.
