Kelly Carrington Staff Writer Creighton RCMP Sgt. Mark Svaren presented the January Community Policing Report at last week's town council meeting. Having been stationed in Creighton for just less than two years, Svaren said he 'doesn't see an increase in any area in town.' Recently, the RCMP and Creighton Community School have been working more closely together. The RCMP detachment is hoping to foster positive relationships with the students by helping at the school as well as holding cooking classes. 'I'm happy with the changeover and involvement in school,' said Svaren. Looking through the report, Svaren said from 'a community standpoint, I think traffic is still a concern.' Of the 44 total offenses reported during the month of January, 12 came under Traffic/Provincial Stats. Public intoxication, the sergeant added, 'is still a concern,' though it's often not in the public eye. 'We do write tickets for public intoxication, but that's not the answer,' he said. Handing out a ticket for public intoxication, said Svaren, is 'pretty inconsequential.' On a positive note, Svaren told council the detachment is looking into snowmobile patrols. '...to focus on education and positive ticketing,' he said, adding, however, that if violations are reported or seen, they will be dealt with. 'Our mission is for (people) to be well aware we are out there.' Other highlights from the council meeting: Council agreed to order two Town of Creighton concrete entry monuments from Kel-t-grafix with an estimated cost of between $18,000 and $20,000. Council moved to donate $200 to the NOR-MAN Regional Health Authority's PARTY (Prevent Alcohol and Risk-Related Trauma in Youth) program _ the same amount donated by the town in 2011. Council moved to donate $100 to the Women's Safe Haven's V-Day Event, in March. A $100 donation will be made to the Bust the Winter Blues Festival Fishing Derby this weekend. Council agreed to proceed with tax enforcement proceedings by advertising the list of lands in arrears for 2011. Council gave the first reading to Bylaw 1-2012 _ to provide for the licensing, regulating and governing or persons in business within the Town of Creighton. Council added Recreation Director to article 7.05 a) in the current union contract, relative to the employee's wages while away for less than four weeks. Council agreed to send two workers from the Town of Creighton to the Chlorination ATAP Workshop in Saskatoon April 2-3 with a registration cost of $400 each, plus travel expenses.
