Town cautioned on sharing rec costs

Creighton town council is being urged to think twice before considering a City of Flin Flon proposal to share recreation costs across the region.

Creighton town council is being urged to think twice before considering a City of Flin Flon proposal to share recreation costs across the region.
Town council last week heard from a resident concerned about Flin Flon’s proposal to divvy up combined municipal rec costs in Flin Flon, Creighton and Denare Beach evenly amongst residents of the area.
“I have serious concerns about this proposal,” the resident wrote in a letter reviewed at the Nov. 27 town council meeting.
The letter went on to describe the number of rec facilities in the Flin Flon area compared to those in the smaller communities.
“I believe in the saying ‘if you play, you gotta pay,’” read the letter. “I have had all three of my children involved in various sports and activities as they grew up. As a parent, I willingly paid for road trips, uniforms, extra private lessons, you name it.
“I did not expect at any point or time that someone else would foot these bills. It was part of the accepted practice for being a parent with active children.”
The letter went on to explain the resident’s issue with the notion of shared costs.
“Before you, as a Council, agree to considering this ‘arrangement,’ I would ask that you perhaps request a forensic audit to be produced by the City of Flin Flon (to show where their financial concerns are),” read the letter, “and that you conduct a public hearing/vote on the issue prior to making any financial commitment of this magnitude.”
Incomplete
Town council has by no means agreed to Flin Flon’s suggestion. In fact, the proposal itself is not yet complete, as financial details are still being compiled.
In another matter, town council reviewed information on Creighton’s recently announced advancement in the Nuclear Waste Management Organization (NWMO) site selection process.
Council received acknowledgment from NWMO for the “important contribution made by the Town of Creighton to advancing Canada’s plan for the safe, long-term management of used nuclear fuel.”
A letter outlined the progress made in the selection process to date. Creighton is now one of 17 Canadian communities in the running to potentially host an underground nuclear waste storage facility.
“The completion of Phase 1 studies with communities marks an important milestone in the site selection process,” read the letter.
The letter included a detailed point-form list of how Creighton has helped the process – including working closely with the NWMO and educating the community.
Other meeting highlights:
• Council received a letter complimenting the town on its columbarium and adjacent Memory Wall
• Council received a thank-you for its recent $100 donation to Kids Help Phone.
