Thursday meeting to discuss plan to bring refugees to Flin Flon

The newly formed Northern Refugee Sponsorship Committee will host a town hall meeting tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 26 to discuss plans to sponsor a refugee family to move to Flin Flon.

The newly formed Northern Refugee Sponsorship Committee will host a town hall meeting tomorrow, Thursday, Nov. 26 to discuss plans to sponsor a refugee family to move to Flin Flon.

Committee chairwoman Laura Sparling notes that while the Syrian refugee crisis kickstarted the local committee, the group is open to sponsoring the family that’s the best fit, no matter their nationality.

“A refugee is a refugee,” she says. “But Syria has the greatest number of refugees in the world right now, so that’s what we have our eye on.”

Sparling says the cost of settling a family of six is about $32,500. The federal government pays one-third of this fee, so the Flin Flon committee will need to raise about $21,700.

They hope to double that, and sponsor two families.

The committee is asking for help with donations or in-kind contributions, which count toward the total fee.

The town hall meeting will be held at 7 pm tomorrow, Thursday, at the Flin Flon City Hall Council Chambers. A migration and resettlement program coordinator will be in attendance.
