They say critics are a lot more particular than audiences. But even if that's the case, Three Brides for Kasos went over pretty well at the recent Winnipeg Fringe Festival. While a little difficult to impress, both CBC and the Winnipeg Free Press gave the Flin Flon Community Choir production a rating of three stars out of five. "... there is a glow about the talented performers who populate this heartfelt production," wrote CBC critic Chris Read. "They're obviously in love with each other and what they're doing Ð and in that sense, this show is kind of beautiful." Read called the performance, one of many viewed at the popular Fringe Festival, a "well-oiled musical production" with a "solid cast that delivers impassioned and thoroughly proficient performances." Free Press critic Kevin Prokosh had good things to say, too. "After dieting on so many skinny solo shows and barebones productions presented on empty stages, fringe-goers will find Three Brides overwhelming in its ambition..." he wrote. Prokosh praised the singing from "an impressive set of leads" and singled out Debbie Warren for her vocal talent. Three Brides for Kasos, set on a Greek island in the 19th century, tells the story of a doctor caught up in a love triangle. The musical, which debuted in Flin Flon in June, is the result of a collaboration between local musician Mark Kolt and Elias Kulukundis, a New York City shipping magnate. It's based on a true story featured in Kulukundis' 1968 memoir.
