Over $11,000 along with many other prizes were awarded at the 18th Annual Cranberry Portage Trout Challenge, held August 4 and 5. Fifty-two teams entered the event and few left empty-handed, with several prizes handed out for hidden lengths and novelty categories. Prizes were awarded to the top 11 teams: 1st - Barry Anderson and Gord Fidierchuk (Cranberry) with 228.5 inches won $3,500 2nd - Clint and Jill Bickel (Thompson) with 227 inches won $2,500 3rd - Randy Boychuk and Blaine Hyska (Flin Flon) with 221.5 inches won $2,000 4th - Jim Reich and Dave Minish (Swan River) with 219 inches won $780 5th - Martin Ouellet and Rob James (Cranberry) with 217 inches won $520 6th - Waterer and Waterer (Winnipeg) with 209 inches won $494 7th - Bob Anderson and Jack Brown (Cranberry) with 204.5 inches won $416 8th/9th (tie) - Brian and Gunthar Lundie (Cranberry) with 203.5 inches won $364; Chris Bowles and Gary Hamilton (Cranberry/Edmonton) with 203.5 inches won $364 10th - Kerry Raddysh and Jim Churchill (Creighton/Denare Beach) with 202.5 inches won $364 See 'Weekend' P. Con't from P. 11th - Sheldon Wiebe and Joby Nomeland (Flin Flon) with 202 inches won a 2008 Trout Challenge Entry valued at $150 It was a weekend of huge fish with seven Master Angler Trout caught. The largest fish Saturday was a 42 in. caught by Clint Bickel (Thompson) and the largest fish Sunday was a 42 in. caught by Barry Anderson (Cranberry). Both men were awarded a Team Manitoba Master Angler jacket from Manitoba Tourism. They split the $100 prize for the largest fish of the tournament. All anglers catching Master trout were entered in a draw for a painting donated by James Dean, and it was won by Anderson. The Candace Danielson Memorial Trophy was awarded by to Mandi Dushanek (Delburne, Alberta) for landing a 26 in. fish, the largest trout caught by a female. This trophy was donated by Candace's family. Dushanek also received a plaque and a 2008 Cranberry Portage Trout Challenge Team Entry valued at $150. The Fifth Annual John Moodie Memorial Trophy is awarded annually to the highest placing Cranberry Portage team, and until next year the bragging rights that go along with that belong to Barry Anderson and Gord Fidierchuk. Two Bill Bannock tickets were awarded to the men for the Greatest Comeback - catching 31.5 inches more on Sunday than on Saturday. Glasses donated by the Royal Bank and a Trout Challenge hat with a pewter emblem will be going to Brazil with Felipe Campos, who won the prize for being the angler from furthest away. The youngest angler, seven-year-old Alexander Murray, will be ready for next year with his safety kit, filleting knife, and tackle box donated by Bradey Fidierchuk. A pair of LUND hats and shirts were won by Rod and Zach Alexander for the family fish draw. Two prizes were awarded for hidden lengths - Dushanek and Dushanek won $100 donated by Leptick Sawmills and Beaulieu and Gaudet each won a leathermen and hat donated by Westcon. Lawrence and Swain won a $20 prize for finding themselves in 20th place. For those who didn't have a great weekend of fishing there was a hard luck prize, a 100-piece tool kit donated by Castle Building, awarded to Buggy Danielson for losing his digital camera in the lake, and a daily skunk prize of a cooler bag, pitcher, and glasses awarded to Kosmenko and Kosmenko for Saturday and Moncrief and Moncrief for Sunday.
