The ground beneath our feet has kept Flin Flon alive for decades. Unfortunately, it’s also a major factor behind our infamously bumpy streets.
What makes it so challenging to build roads in this area, Director of Works and Operations Rick Bacon has said, is how varied the ground is. In a perfect world, streets would blanket a consistent terrain.
That’s not the case here. Some roads stretch over the likes of muskeg, clay, rock or a combination thereof. Beneath some areas, mine waste – hardly the most suitable material – was used as fill.
Not surprisingly, and despite the city having pumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into our streets, many of them remain imperfect, to put it mildly.
The Reminder isn’t one for sugarcoating the truth, and we’re not about to start now. Flin Flon’s roads are awful. Positively, absolutely awful. So awful that anyone who lives here for any period will hear the phrase “worst roads in Canada” more times than he or she can count.
The Reminder has analyzed the community to single out Flin Flon’s 10 worst roads. Our rankings do not include back alleys or surrounding communities.
