They oughta be in pictures

Friends’ movie poster recreations a social media hit

What started out as a way to escape summer boredom went viral for Dean Allison.

Allison, who plays for the Flin Flon Bombers, and friend Ben Vikich spent their Mondays this off-season recreating famous movie posters with themselves as the stars.

“We were super bored one Monday and came up with the funny idea,” said Allison. “We thought it would be hilarious to reenact the Step Brothers movie poster and post it to Facebook and Instagram.”

The pair hoped to make their friends laugh with a one-time stunt, but the pictures quickly took on a life of their own.

“It got pretty popular,” said Allison, now back in Flin Flon for the Bombers’ main camp.

Recreations

Allison and Vikich, who plays for the BCHL’s Surrey Eagles, recreated nearly 20 different movie posters, including The Notebook, Couples Retreat, Wayne’s World, Wedding Crashers and Nacho Libre.

“We did it strictly just to make our friends laugh,” said Allison

But it did more than that. With the hashtag #MovieStarMonday trending on Twitter and Instagram, one of the posters was then uploaded to Redit.com – another popular social media website.

The friends were unaware of that until a friend of Vikich’s brother made mention of it.

“It really sort of took off,” said Allison.

The duo even set a goal to have their project seen and mentioned by Ellen Degeneres on her TV show.

“It didn’t happen, but that’s okay,” said Dean.

The pair posted their last poster on Aug. 18 as they are now in hockey mode for the season.

“Our focus is totally on hockey season, now,” said Allison.

Both he and Vikich will start their final year of junior hockey as 20 year olds this season.

“We don’t want any distractions,” said Allison.

Excited

Allison will be one of 60 hockey players on the ice this weekend for the Bombers’ main camp.

“I’m super excited,” Allison said, Monday. “There’s lots of great guys and we’re going to have a pretty solid year this year. It’s great seeing all the guys back in town.”
