Looking to challenge your chili or add passion to your pasta? The secret ingredient has finally been uncovered. According to Toronto-based Burak Jacobson Research Partners, almost three in four Canadians who purchase ketchup use it as an ingredient in recipes, with more than half cooking with it more than once a month. Surprised? Heinz Canada certainly was, and has responded with the launch of Heinzitup.com, a new recipe web site showcasing how ketchup adds flavor to all our favorite meals. Unbeknownst to most until now, this much-loved condiment has become a respected force within the culinary world. "When we recently discovered that ketchup played such an important role in Canadian cooking, we listened," says Gary Power, director, Ketchup & Specialty Condiments, Heinz Canada. Among Heinz companies worldwide, Heinz Canada is the only company to initiate a focused effort responding to this culinary trend by developing ketchup-inspired recipes and providing them a permanent home at Heinzitup.com. Pasta, sausage, and rice dishes are just a few examples of how ketchup is used as an ingredient. For Canadians, the second-largest (per capita) global consumers of ketchup behind Sweden, ketchup has been a trusted pantry item for almost a century, and has now gained culinary credibility. "Ketchup is truly an ideal flavor enhancer," says Dana McCauley, food trend expert and cookbook author, who partnered with Heinz to develop more than 170 recipes for the site, with almost half showcasing ketchup. "Ketchup's sweet, tangy taste provides a solid foundation for many flavors. What most people overlook is that ketchup is simply made from tomatoes, the base of many recipes enjoyed around the world." The Burak Jacobson research revealed that the 74 per cent of Canadians using ketchup as an ingredient is consistent across the country for families with children and without. Furthermore, 96 per cent of consumers who use ketchup in cooking are loyal to Heinz Ketchup. Meatloaf is the most popular recipe for ketchup usage (33 per cent), followed by pasta sauces (17 per cent) and BBQ sauce (17 per cent). Sweet & Sour Sauce is a popular usage of ketchup in the West (17 per cent), while French Quebec uses it in dips (22 per cent).
