The Reminder has been named the top Manitoba newspaper in its circulation class for the second year in a row.

It was one of 10 honours for this publication at the Manitoba Community Newspapers Association’s Better Newspapers Awards and Convention in Winnipeg over the weekend. Judging was based on 2015 publications.

The Reminder topped the best in class category for newspapers with a circulation of less than 1,499. Among all Manitoba community newspapers, the paper placed second overall.

In its circulation class, The Reminder took first place for best editorial page and best layout and design, and second place for best front page.

The paper also picked up six other honours for newspapers in all circulation classes, including two first-place finishes.

Libby Stoker-Lavelle earned first place for best First Nations coverage with “A century later, Collins gets his due.” The article detailed the cairn in uptown Flin Flon that honours the late prospector David Collins.

Jonathon Naylor and Terri Eger took first for best environmental story with “Town questions discharge plan,” detailing concerns Sherridon residents had about the planned release of tailings-laced water into Kississing Lake.

Naylor’s “Horrocks ruling about fairness” placed second in the best editorial category. The piece offered insight into a human-rights ruling that gave a former Flin Flon health care aide her job back.

Stoker-Lavelle and Valerie Durnin teamed up to write “Auditor report details home care concerns,” which placed second for best health story. The article detailed shortfalls in Manitoba’s home care system.

Stoker-Lavelle placed third for best sports story with “Kicking footballs and taking names,” about three female members of the Creighton Kodiaks football team.

Lastly, The Reminder’s 2015 Christmas edition placed second among all Christmas editions published last year.
