FLIN FLON SCHOOL DIVISION Condensed Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees held September 14, 2004 in the Board Room of the Division Office, 9 Terrace Avenue, Flin Flon, Manitoba. Election Results - 2004/2005 School Year - Chair - Trustee Murray Skeavington; Vice-Chair - Trustee Colleen McKee. PRESENTATIONS - Nil BUSINESS ARISING Finance Committee - Meeting confirmed for September 28th following the Regular Board Meeting. MTS Liaison - As per the request from Wanda Pickell, FFTA President, dates to be scheduled for two meetings; first meeting in October/November and second meeting in March/April. This item will be brought back on the September 28th regular agenda. ACTION CORRESPONDENCE The following correspondence was received as information: - MAST Re: Staff Changes. - Manitoba Inclusive Education Summit - Everyone Belongs In Our Schools - October 21st - Winnipeg. - 65th Annual NSBA Conference - April 16-19, 2005 - San Diego. - MAST Executive Meting Highlights. - NSBA Newsletter. MPESA Conference - Request from D. Gawiak, Co-Chair for the Manitoba Physical Education Supervisors' Association Fall Conference, for support for the conference being held in Flin Flon on September 22-24, 2004. A Level 2 sponsorship in the amount of $100 will be provided. ADMINISTRATOR'S REPORTS The Superintendent and Secretary-Treasurer reported to the Board on the following divisional matters: K-S4 Agenda - Minister Peter Bjornson and staff from the Department hosted a consultation session in Thompson on September 21st. The session reviewed the six provincial priority areas: - Improving outcomes especially for less successful learners. - Strengthening links among schools, families and communities. - Strengthening school planning and reporting. - Improving learning opportunities for educators. - Strengthening pathways among secondary schools, post-secondary education and work. - Using policy and practice to research and evidence. A divisional team including a Trustee and a community member were invited to attend. Superintendent Veitch advised that arrangements have been made to participate by teleconference at 9:15 a.m. in the Superintendent's Office. Trustee Wilson agreed to represent the Board. Min of Ed Visit - Minister of Education, Training and Citizenship, Peter Bjornson visited Flin Flon on Monday, September 20th at 10:30 a.m. The Minister spent approximately one hour touring through a couple of the schools and a lunch meeting was held at the Division Office for all Trustees available to attend. Possible discussion items are: vocational programming, enrollment numbers and the effect of Creighton's withdrawal of students, new programming with UCN and the Ward System. MPESA Conference - Flin Flon hosted the Manitoba Physical Education Supervisors' Association Fall Conference from September 21st - 24th. Physical Education Supervisors from across the province worked on topics such as Middle Years Programming, Assessment and Reporting, and Senior 3 & 4 Programming. Thanks to Doug Gawiak for his efforts in ensuring Flin Flon provides a high quality conference. Community Meeting - The fall meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 3rd, at 7:00 p.m. in the McIsaac gymnasium. Information on the possible solutions to declining enrollments, that were identified in the spring, will be shared. Staff, students and community members are encouraged to attend. A meeting of the Long Range Planning Committee will be scheduled prior to. Community Policing - The local RCMP will be hosting a meeting to discuss the issue of vandalism and community policing. The meeting was scheduled to take place on Wednesday, September 29th, 2004 at 1:00 p.m. in the City Council Chambers. Pay Accounts - The Division accounts as at September 8, 2004 in the amount of $203,331.74, cheque numbers 162 through 234, will be paid. REPORTS - Nil CHAIR'S REPORT Thank You - Trustee Skeavington thanked the Board for their support in the election advising that it is an honour to serve as the Chairperson for the upcoming year. On behalf of the Board of Trustees, Chair Skeavington thanked Trustee Wilson for his time, effort and guidance as Chair during the past two years. Golf Zones - Hapnot Collegiate hosted the Golf Zones at the Phantom Lake Golf Club on Friday, September 17th, 2004. Sports Programs - Sports programs are now up and running at the local schools. The public was encouraged to attend the various sporting activities. NEW BUSINESS Trustee Requests -As Per Policy 2:6 - All Trustees - NSBA 65th Annual Conference - April 16-19, 2003 - San Diego. Trustees requiring time off work - Minister of Education, Training and Citizenship Meeting - September 20th - Flin Flon. Information correspondence was made available for review. The meeting adjourned at 8:42 p.m. School Board meetings are held the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. in the Division Office Board Room located at 9 Terrace Avenue.
