FLIN FLON SCHOOL DIVISION Condensed Minutes of the Regular Meeting of the Board of Trustees held January 13, 2004 in the Board Room of the Division Office, 9 Terrace Avenue, Flin Flon, Manitoba. Meeting Request - The Superintendent was directed to indicate the willingness of the Flin Flon School Board to reopen discussions with the Creighton School Board on their decision to establish their own high school. PRESENTATIONS - Nil BUSINESS ARISING Policy Amendments - The following amended policies were approved: Policy 3:1 - Board Meetings; Policy 3:3 - Minutes of Board Meetings; Policy 3:5 - Notification of Board Meetings; Policy 3:6 - Committee of the Whole; and Policy 4:3 - Finance Committee. Notice of motion was given to amend Policy 3:2 - General Regulations Re: Meetings. Policy Review/Resolutions Committee - Meeting confirmed for January 20, 2004. Workplace Safety & Health Act - MAST - December 3, 2003 - Re: Criteria for variances to existing committee requirements was referred to the Workplace Safety & Health Committee. 2004/2005 Budget - Flin Flon Teachers= Association - December 12, 2003 - Re: Educational and fiscal matters in relation to the 2004/2005 FFSD final budget. With the go ahead of Creighton High School, FFTA would like to meet with the Finance Committee prior to the Adraft@ budget to discuss long-term plans and the impact this decision may have on FFSD. The meeting was confirmed for January 26, 2004. Meeting Request - Hapnot Leadership Council requested a meeting with the Board to discuss the budget for Hapnot Collegiate facilities. The meeting was confirmed for February 11, 2004. Student Council Meetings - The Elementary and High School Student Councils will be invited to attend dinner meetings with the Board to review Council activities and discuss their school concerns. Meetings will be confirmed for March. ADMINISTRATORS REPORTS The Superintendent and Secretary-Treasurer reported to the Board on the following divisional matters: Pharmasave Neighbours Helping Neighbours Program - Thank you to Ryan Watt, Scott Davidson and all the staff at the local Pharmasave Store for the contribution of over $10,000 to our local schools. This money is used to supplement educational programming. Provincial Science Curriculum Committee - Congratulations to Sylvie Dufour, Science and Immersion Teacher at both Hapnot and McIsaac on her selection to this provincial committee. Maintenance Update - During the Christmas break, the renovation was completed on the Ruth Betts Library and the cleaning of the Library and two classrooms at McIsaac School Ecole McIsaac over the Christmas Break. Thank you to Garry Doverspike and the Custodial staff for their hard work. Community Learning Network - Our partnership with the Community Learning Network continues with the offering of two evening courses at Hapnot Collegiate. Students, parents and community members interested in learning about Simply Accounting and Web Page Design are encouraged to contact C.L.N. School News - The holiday season was highlighted by excellent Christmas concerts at all of our schools. Attendance was very good, and our first attempt at using the Community Hall was successful. Schools also collected a number of donations for the Food Bank and Gifts for Tots. Hapnot Collegiates X-Mas Excitement was very successful. A great deal of talent was displayed by the students. Preparations for the upcoming Dinner Theatre are well underway. Students and staff are hard at work to put on another excellent showcase. Mr. Gray is planning for a Science trip to Drumheller. The third and fourth editions of the Tonopah Times are off the presses. Copies are available for reading on the information correspondence table. Interested people are encouraged to contact the school for a copy. There is also a copy of Mrs. Lytwyns article No Marks Off? on the information table. Many Faces Christmas luncheon was a huge success. Santa was in attendance and all students got a present for being good this year! The school is also welcoming Myrna Ewing, who is a student in the Aboriginal Social Worker Program at Northlands College. The Saskatchewan High School students from Many Faces and Hapnot met Northland College Programming Consultants on January 8th to determine post-secondary needs in our area. All of the Senior 4 students will be busy writing the English and Math provincial exams. Thank you to Heather Lytwyn, James Dumenko, Al Garinger, and Harland Garinger for coordinating the local staff. Ruth Betts Drug Abuse Resistence Education (DARE) Program starts January 14th with the Grade 5 students. Constable Nolan Suss is presenting the program, and he met with the Parent Council to review the program. A big thank you to the parent volunteers for organizing the Book Fair. The school received approximately $700 in books due to their efforts. The new computers have been installed in the Parkdale computer labs and the Science room. Mrs. Britton presented the Feeling Yes, Feeling No Program to the Grade 1-4 students at McIsaac School Ecole McIsaac. Sporting News - The Basketball season is beginning at our elementary schools. The Senior High teams have been operating for over a month, with the Kopper Kings attending a tournament in Edmonton over the Christmas Break. The Wrestling Program, which involves students from Grade 4 to Senior 4, has also been busy practicing and participated in a tournament on January 10th at McIsaac. The Sunrise Gym Program, which is run by the School Mentors, is continuing to offer students an early morning activity program at all of our elementary schools. Grade 5-6 Bowling and Grade 7-8 Curling Programs are going well with students learning some lifetime leisure skills in these enjoyable activities. Thank you to all the staff and community members that make these programs possible and so successful. Pay Accounts - The Division accounts as at January 7, 2004 in the amount of $321,570.54, cheque numbers 91024 through 91207, net of cancelled cheque 90902 valued at $700, will be paid. REPORTS Workplace Safety & Health Committee - December 1, 2003 - Trustee Mitchell. CHAIRS REPORT Funding Approval - The Division has been notified that the Public Schools Finance Board has approved funds to replace the dust collector in the Shop area at McIsaac School Ecole McIsaac. Tenders are out for the upgrade to the Science Labs at Hapnot Collegiate. NEW BUSINESS Trustee Requests -As per Policy 2:6 - Trustees Simpson - Success Starts Early: 2004 Early Childhood Development Forum - February 26 & 27, 2004 - Winnipeg; and Trustees Simpson, McKee and Mitchell - USWA Negotiations - February 17 & 18, 2004. Information correspondence was made available for review. The meeting adjourned to Committee of the Whole, reconvened and adjourned at 9:10 p.m. School Board meetings are held the 2nd and 4th Tuesdays at 7:30 p.m. in the Division Office Board Room located at 9 Terrace Avenue.
