The mayor of The Pas is continuing his tough stance on suspected gang members. In a bid to keep gang members out of businesses and off private property, Gary Hopper is calling on the province to fortify trespassing laws, CBC reported yesterday. "Fines have to be raised to a level that is a deterrent," he was quoted as saying. "I would leave that up to the minister of justice to determine what that would be, but certainly it would be well over $25." Hopper plans to write a letter next week to Justice Minister Gord Mackintosh asking that the Petty Trespass Act be strengthened, according to the report. Earlier this month, Hopper asked business owners in his community to bar suspected gang members. "If we get challenged in court for infringing on someone's rights, bring it on," he told the Winnipeg Free Press at the time. "We want to make them feel as uncomfortable in our community as possible." The Free Press also quoted the owner of a hotel in The Pas who said that "people are still getting beaten up, having their liquor stolen. We've got 10-year-olds running around with knives."
