Table for One brings people together

Everyone should have people to spend Thanksgiving dinner with.

A new event created by Creighton recreation director Channa Senyk is making sure that’s possible.

Senyk is putting together the first ever Table for One Thanksgiving dinner at the Creighton Community Hall on October 10.

“It’s for people who don’t have family to be with during the holidays,” she said.

The idea for the event came from Senyk’s personal experiences. Over the years, she has invited newcomers and people who didn’t know anyone in the area to her home.

“We invited them to join us on different occasions, Christmas and Thanksgiving, and became quick friends with them,” she said.

The experiences of hosting newcomers made Senyk think there might be others in the community in the same situation.

“If these people don’t have friends or family and are missing their own families back home, there’s probably a lot of others we don’t know of that are in the same situation.”

Every year the community sees new residents. “We thought it would be a great way for those people to have someone to sit down with at suppertime.”

Dinner will be a traditional Thanksgiving meal, with turkey, potatoes, perogies, salad, veggies, “complete with pumpkin pie and whipped cream,” said Senyk.

“We have a very minimal charge of $5, and that is to help us keep control of numbers of people.”

The cost of the dinner is kept low through corporate support. Hudbay Minerals, Areva Resources and Cameco and the Flin Flon Friendship Centre have all contributed to the event.

Senyk said it’s open to all area residents, and is ideal for “those celebrating on their own, new to the community, low in means or otherwise just looking for some companionship.”

The event will be held at 5 pm on Saturday, October 10 at Creighton Community Hall.

Tickets are available at the Creighton Recreation office and at the Flin Flon Friendship Centre. Senyk said there is room for 150 people.
