The University College of the North (UCN) is hosting its first symposium for Aboriginal and northern Manitobans at Keewatin Community College in The Pas March 23 and 24, Advanced Education and Training Minister Diane McGifford announced yesterday. "This symposium will bring together elders, northerners, scholars, college faculty and staff to explore possibilities for UCN programs, courses and research," McGifford said. "Delegates will share their experiences about attending post-secondary educational institutions away from their home communities and discuss the realities of living in the North." Honouring the Voices of Northern Manitoba is the theme of the two-day event. Activities will include concurrent workshops on incorporating northern and Aboriginal perspectives into programming, arts and language programs, economic development and environmental issues. "Students and faculty will learn more about the experiences of, opportunities for, and challenges faced by Aboriginal and northern scholars," McGifford said. "The contributions of the many people who have worked hard to gain an education while staying connected to their roots will be acknowledged and their contributions to society recognized." "Educators and the general public will benefit by attending these workshops," added Aboriginal and Northern Affairs Minister Oscar Lathlin.
