Surgeries planned for Flin Flon General Hospital will now be moved out of town after the departure of the facility's general surgeon.
Dr. Rashid Abulhoda, previously the general surgeon at the hospital employed by the Northern Health Region (NHR), has left the region and Flin Flon. Abulhoda’s departure went into effect March 20.
“We can confirm that Dr. Abulhoda is no longer an employee of the Northern Health Region and no longer provides service at the Flin Flon Clinic/Flin Flon General Hospital,” said an NHR spokesperson in a statement to The Reminder.
Due to Abulhoda’s departure, surgical cases previously scheduled in Flin Flon will not be carried out at Flin Flon General Hospital. Procedures will be referred to other NHR facilities outside Flin Flon.
It is unknown if locums - medical professionals who work within a community but live elsewhere, travelling to the community for predetermined shifts - will cover any gaps in services relating to Abulhoda’s departure in Flin Flon.
“During this period, any surgical cases would be referred to The Pas or other centres as appropriate,” said the spokesperson.
Abulhoda joined the staff at Flin Flon General Hospital in March 2016, serving in the community for four years as a general surgeon. Originally from Lebanon, Abulhoda began practicing in Manitoba in 2014 and lived full-time in Flin Flon while working for the NHR.
