Manitoba Hydro reminds everyone that water and electricity do not mix. Protect outlets around the garage, pool and garden with ground fault circuit interrupters or GFCIs. These devices will cut the flow of power if a leak is detected and protect you from the potential for electric shock. Check your outdoor outlets and then make the change to GFCIs if necessary. Never leave a plugged-in appliance where it might fall into a pond or swimming pool. If this happens, do not try to pull the appliance out. First turn off the power at the source and then remove it from the water. Then have the appliance checked by a qualified electrician before you use it. Before you tackle the lawn, check electric mowers and trimmers for frayed power cords, broken plugs and cracked housings. Never use these appliances in the rain or when the grass is wet. And when it comes to extension cords, use only those that are marked "outdoor use" and rated for the job at hand. When you're done, unplug the tools and tuck them away until it's time to cut the grass again. When an electrical storm is on the horizon, head indoors for safety. Don't use any electrical appliances, including hairdryers or microwave ovens. Use the telephone only in an emergency and wait until after the storm to shower. You can also install surge protectors to protect your electronic devices, including modems, telephones and fax machines. And have a flashlight with fresh batteries on hand if a power outage occurs. Children also need a summer safety briefing. Remind them to stay out of fenced-in electrical stations and not to climb hydro poles. Teach them that only qualified hydro personnel are allowed near these types of equipment and that it could be dangerous for children to be near it.
