Home business owners are being invited to form what's being touted as Main Street's first mini mall in the vacant lower level of the Co-op. A lease agreement is in place for July and August allowing businesses to rent space at the store, with the potential for a longer-term set-up. "We're certainly hoping that it could work into something long term," said Dave Kendall, past-president of the Chamber of Commerce. "This might be considered a two-month pilot project. It's certainly going to depend on the experiences of the businesses that go in there." The chamber and Greenstone Community Futures Development Corporation have hired a summer student to get the mini mall off the ground. "We've always thought that we should try to have something established where home business owners could display their products," said Kendall. "We also believe it would be a good draw for the downtown businesses, another reason for people to come downtown." The goal is to open early next month with 10-12 businesses on board. Businesses will not have to sign up for the entire two months. "Certainly for a small home business, I think this gives them an opportunity to see if they might be able to do well on Main Street on a year-round basis," said Kendall. Businesses interested in setting up shop in the Co-op may phone Greenstone at 687-6967.
