Suicide awareness finds a creative outlet

Suicide continues to be the second-leading cause of death and injury among children and young teens in Flin Flon.

Suicide continues to be the second-leading cause of death and injury among children and young teens in Flin Flon.

Data released in 2014 by International Association for Suicide Prevention (IASP) shows that someone dies every 40 seconds by suicide; equalling 800,000 people a year worldwide.

According to data released in 2006 by IASP, suicide is the leading cause of death for those between the ages of one and 14 worldwide. In Flin Flon and The Pas, data shows that suicide is the second-leading cause of death and injury in the same age group.

Bring awareness

Hope North – a committee formed within Flin Flon – will be hosting an afternoon to bring awareness to suicide prevention to area children and residents at Pioneer Square.

Wednesday, Sept. 10 marks World Suicide Prevention Day with events being held all over the world, country, and province to spread the message that no one is ever truly alone.

Local school-aged students have been invited to Pioneer Square for the noon-hour event with a focus on middle school grades. Though a large focus is on students, Hope North encourages all area residents to visit the event.

Those in attendance will enjoy music from local musicians Mark Kolt and CC Trubiak as well as a free, healthy lunch.

There will also be fabric squares available for students and residents to show what hope means to them. Flags from last year’s celebration are currently on display at the Primary Health Centre.
