Creighton Community School held their annual Remembrance Day service on Friday, November 7 in the school gym and once again the students did an awesome job. The service began with O' Canada. Then the Story or Remembrance was read, followed by the reading of the poem, In Flanders Fields. Mrs. Gogol read about the Holocaust that was followed by Jennifer McLean and Stacey Becker singing Inscription of Love. Then Walter Olson spoke on Aboriginal Veterans, the "Forgotten Warriors". "Many Aboriginal men and women fought in World War 1 and World War 11 alongside other Canadians. They too, fought for patriotism, to protect their land, to get a job or to see the world. They fought in Hong Kong, waded ashore with the Allied Army on D-Day and trudged their way across Europe to the bitter end. They too, waited for the return of a family member and suffered the loss of a loved one. Some even performed the outlawed Sun Dance ceremony in the spirit of keeping their warriors safe. "World War 11 ended in 1945 but 50 years passed before Aboriginal veterans were allowed to lay Remembrance Day wreaths at the National War Memorial to remember and honour their dead comrades. Today, we lay this wreath to acknowledge all the Aboriginal veterans who fought for our freedom." Then each grade presented a letter decorated with poppies that spelled out "We Remember". The Last Post was played by Lawrence Halldorson followed by two minutes of silence. Rod Walker played the pipes. Then the students watched a very touching slide show of Remembrance while the song "Imagine There's No Heaven" was played in the background. The pictures of war, children as the victims of war, the Atomic Bomb blast and the Twin Towers in flames, were just a few of the very graphic but realistic pictures of war. The slide show really brought home to the students and staff just how horrific war is. As was shown on the screen: In WarÉ Nobody Wins. As each student quietly left the gymnasium, he or she laid their poppy at the base of the Canadian Flag in Remembrance. What a wonderful, heartfelt and though provoking service it was. The students and staff once again did a superb job! The service was arranged and conducted by the Student Leadership Council consisting of Karla Boulet, Aleecia Elliott, Sara Thirnbeck, Cara Hill, Jennifer Abele, Jordan King, Amanda Hill, Shannon Meyer and teachers Stacey Becker and Noelle Gogol.
