Flin Flon School Board trustees have nominated several students and groups for this year’s Manitoba School Boards Association (MSBA) awards.
Mikylo Odut is nominated for a student citizenship award, as is Hapnot Collegiate’s Gay Straight Alliance–Social Justice Equity Club.
“There was a further award called the Premier’s Award for Innovative Excellence in Education, and [we] nominated the programming done by Daniel Dillon in his [computer science] class with what I call the Holodeck, but it’s also VR,” said McLeese.
Award winners will be revealed at the MSBA’s annual general meeting in March.
Virtual Reality
Hapnot Collegiate students received a visit from Daniel Blair, the CEO of Bit Space Development, a Winnipeg-based interactive digital media studio on Jan. 25.
“He is one of the top virtual reality experts in the province,” said board chair Amy Sapergia Green, adding Blair has taught at Red River College and is working on some significant VR projects in Manitoba.
Blair spent an afternoon at Hapnot Collegiate discussing virtual reality opportunities and the tech sector in Manitoba.
“It was a privilege to have Dan work with our students and we look forward to connecting with him again on future projects,” said Sapergia Green.
January’s issue of Teacher Magazine also features an article on virtual reality that makes mention of the technology being used at Hapnot Collegiate.
OverDrive
Staff and students of the Flin Flon School Division now have a digital world of reading material at their fingertips.
The division is now using OverDrive, a digital library database that allows users to borrow digital materials.
“Students are provided with passwords and login information at the school,” said superintendent Constance McLeese, adding the link to OverDrive can be found on the FFSD website.
Students are able to download three books at a time through the program.
