A Ruth Betts School class has become the first group of Flin Flon students to complete an innovative drug and alcohol awareness program. Miranda Hyndman's grade 5 class yesterday held their graduation from the Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) program instructed by Cst. Nolan Suss of the Flin Flon RCMP. "DARE is the best program I have seen for students to understand about drugs," Ruth Betts principal John Belfry told the graduates, who gathered in the small gymnasium. Wearing his traditional red RCMP surge, Cst. Suss also addressed the students, saying he was impressed with their work in DARE over the past 17 weeks. Once a week during that span, Cst. Suss taught the students the program, focusing on allowing students to come up with reasons to stay away from drugs and alcohol rather than being told why. To graduate from DARE, each student had to write an essay on what they learned from the program, among other projects. "The underlying tone of your essays is that drugs just aren't worth it," Cst. Suss told the students. After performing a brief skit on how to say no to drugs, the students were called up one by one to receive their certificates of completion. Graduating (or soon to graduate) were: Hailey Bartlett; Tessa Beech; Michael Benko; Carter Bezo; Riley Blouin; Derek Bolton; Jasmine Chabot; Josh Dumas; Travis Fehr; April Fiddler; Jaimie Fleuty; Bryer Galbraith; Cassandra Gudbranson; Krystal Kozar; Brittney LeClerc; Taylor Maunder; Tyler Mayberry; Brittany McCombie; Gage McKay; Anndee McIntyre; Joshua Mink; Benjamin Murray; JoeAnn Pelletier; Roger Siemens; Destine Spiller; Kalen Stringer; Breanne Szabo; and Robbie Unruh.
