Poetry buffs across North America will enjoy a verse from the pen of a Flin Flon high school student. Victoria Bouvier, a senior at Many Faces Education Centre, will have her poem published in a book after entering a poetry contest for students. "I was very happy. I was kind of in shock," smiled Victoria. "I didn't think this was going to happen. It's not something that happens to everyone." Victoria's poem, written about her aboriginal heritage, is now eligible to win the author a cash prize in addition to the honour of being published. The writer entered her work in U.S.-based Creative Communication's Celebration of Poetry Contest, which was open to high school students across North America. Victoria had written a number of poems before Ñ she loves assembling rhyming words into a cohesive work Ñ but this was the first time she had entered such a contest. "My Aunt Rose inspired me to hand in the poem because I was kind of shy about it," she said. "She told me, 'No, this is really good. Hand it in.'" Victoria had been informed of the contest by her English teacher, KayLynne Neubuhr, who brought it to her class' attention. Neubuhr was very pleased, but not necessarily surprised, that Victoria won, saying, "She's got a lot of creative ability." Victoria commended her school for inspiring students to educate themselves beyond the classroom. "Many Faces just encourages you to take part in these extracurricular activities to further your education," she said. As for the future, Victoria plans to begin a post-secondary education after her graduation this June. While she's not yet sure which career direction she will take, there's one profession she certainly hasn't ruled out Ñ poet.
