Brittany Lyons may have been surprised at her recent nomination for a provincial citizenship award, but she was probably the only one. The senior at Many Faces Education Centre has been chosen as the Flin Flon School Division's nominee for the Manitoba Association of School Trustees (MAST) Student Citizenship Award. "I was obviously surprised when I found out I was nominated," said the outgoing honour role student. "It was overwhelming." Brittany was selected based on her strong academic standing and her substantial involvement with different community activities. She helped organize a car wash for cancer research in honour of Charlie Mott, a Many Faces teacher who passed away last summer. She's also worked with disabled youth, helped the Flin Flon, Creighton and Area SPCA, organized youth sports, and is active on her school's graduation committee. "When I was growing up and participating in different recreation programs, I learned a lot from the volunteers," said the part-time Wal-Mart cashier. "So I feel that it's important to give back so that other people can have the lifestyle that I had." "What if nobody in the world helped people out? There would be no community," Brittany added. Many Faces principal Jane Dupre said Brittany is the perfect nominee for the award. "She's very strong academically and she's a really good role model," said the principal. "She's been a good leader for our school so we're really proud of her." Brittany has equally kind words for her school. "Many Faces has helped teach me to accept people for who they are and to make them feel comfortable," said the teen. "That's why I believe it's important to be a good citizen in your school and community. I'm proud to be representing Many Faces and our school division." School divisions across the province were invited to nominate one student for the MAST Student Citizenship Award. The winner is expected to be announced this spring.
