Services slowed down at the Human Resources and Skills Development Canada centre yesterday after staff joined a nationwide strike. Just one designated worker remained in place to do the work of three people as members of the Public Service Alliance of Canada hit the picket lines. That's impacted the employment insurance, income security and job hunting services offered at the Main St. facility. "It's certainly not business as usual," said union representative Jocelyne Poirier in a phone interview from her Winnipeg office. The Flin Flon staff joined thousands of federal civil service workers yesterday in a strike over wages and rollbacks on benefits. But no Human Resources buildings have closed because the federal government and the union agreed on designated employees who would continue working in the event of a stoppage. Poirier would not wager a guess as to how long the strike will last. The union's contract with the government expired in June 2003.
