RCMP would have the authority to seize vehicles involved in street racing under legislation Manitoba Justice Minister Gord Mackintosh hopes will be in place by June. Proposed amendments to the Highway Traffic Act now before the Legislature would allow officers to impound such vehicles for 48 hours. "Street racing is a serious risk to the public and we're going to help police counter that," Mackintosh told The Winnipeg Sun. "Giving police the ability to seize and impound vehicles used for street racing is another tool for them and one part of the solution to this issue that is becoming of great concern." British Columbia is reportedly the only province that currently has such legislation in place. Street racing is a growing concern in a number of larger and smaller communities across Canada. Many police officers believe films such as "The Fast and the Furious," which glamorize the practice, contribute to the problem.
