A new Town of Creighton bylaw will change the way some parents drop their kids off at school.
The new Town bylaw will amend existing community traffic bylaws to make First Avenue near Creighton Community School a one-way street. Under the new bylaw, the street will run from west to east, going from Creighton’s Main Street to First Street East.
The bylaw change received second and third and final reading during the August 26 Creighton town council meeting, passing unanimously.
The measure was meant, according to a report from council’s bylaws, resolutions, policy and fiscal services committee, to “allow for a safer way for drop offs and pickups in the right lane and for the left lane to be used for through traffic.”
According to the Town and the bylaws committee, letters were sent to First Avenue residents asking whether they would support or have any issue with the change. The Town first proposed the change after a letter from Creighton School Division director of education Vincent Cable, received by council earlier this summer.
“It came from the school,” said Creighton chief administrative officer Paula Muench during the August 26 meeting.
Signage marking the change is expected to be up on the street before school begins Sept. 8.
