Canada Post has expressed disappointment that union negotiators representing the Union of Postal Communications Employees (UPCE) have threatened Canadians with a service disruption this Christmas. Employees represented by this union don't handle the collection, processing or delivery of mail. "This action is irresponsible", said Mark MacDonell, General Manager of Labour Relations at Canada Post. "The union didn't even respond to our very in-depth global offer... Instead they walked away from the negotiating table and informed us they intend to take a strike vote." The 2,400-member UPCE bargaining unit provides administrative support and clerical services. A work stoppage by these employees would not affect mail delivery in Canada. Canada Post will continue to be available to resume meaningful negotiations at any time and remains hopeful that a fair negotiated settlement can be reached.
