Cranberry Portage Elementary School recently held its Second Annual Spelling Bee.
The April 15 spelling bee was open to students from grades 3-8. It was split into two categories: grades 3-5 and grades 6-8. Each student in these classes received study words to review the week prior to the bee.
At the spelling bee, each student stood before a panel that consisted of a judge and a recorder.
Eleven students participated in the grades 3-5 bee. After 13 rounds of exciting competition, Zeanna Robinson of grade 5 was the winner and Brianne Morin of grade 4 was the runner-up.
Ten students participated from grades 6-8. After 12 rounds of competition, Ainsley McCracken of grade 7 was the winner. There were two bonus rounds to determine the runner-up, who was Linnea McNichol of grade 8.
The winners received a $50 gift card and runners-up were each awarded a $25 gift card. The school librarian, Mrs. McCracken, has been organizing the event for the past two years.
“It really is an exciting event to watch,” she said. “The students do a great job spelling, and promote healthy competition by cheering for everyone. If our little school can do it, any school can. My ultimate goal is to have a northern-wide spelling bee.”
The school also hosted its first in-class spelling bee for the grade 1/2 class. All students participated and had a fun time learning how a spelling bee works. Each participant received a certificate and a Frisbee.
