Special weather statement issued for much of northern Manitoba, Sask. - snow, freezing rain expected

A pair of unwanted guests are expected to come to Flin Flon tonight and throughout this week - freezing rain and snow.

A pair of unwanted guests are expected to come to Flin Flon tonight and throughout this week - freezing rain and snow.

The Flin Flon area and all nearby communities, as well as a band of northern Saskatchewan and Manitoba through to the Ontario border, are currently under a special weather statement as of 4 p.m. Tuesday.

A low pressure system coming from Montana is responsible for the inclement weather, which is expected to start impacting the area Tuesday night and isn't expected to relent until at least Thursday. That system is expected to bring about five to 10 centimetres of snow Tuesday through northern Manitoba, with more expected Wednesday and a trail of freezing rain expected from The Pas eastward.

"A band of snow will make its way through the region Tuesday night bringing, 5-10 centimetres of snow to parts of north central Manitoba. This area of snowfall will continue to make its way northeast Wednesday, where sections over northeastern Manitoba could see another accumulating 5-10 centimetres of snow. In addition, there is also a broad risk of freezing rain further south from The Pas eastwards towards Island Lake which will persist Tuesday night through Wednesday," reads the weather statement issued by Environment Canada Tuesday.

The weather is expected to worsen late Wednesday, with more snowfall expected.

"The next push of snow is expected to move into the region Wednesday night into Thursday and will bring the potential for warning-level snowfall amounts of 10 centimetres over a 12 hour period to the region - however, this will bear monitoring as the system develops," reads the statement.

The current Environment Canada forecast predicts the Flin Flon area will get between 13 to 24 centimetres of snow by Wednesday night.
