Special services levy delay means budget on hold

The City of Flin Flon’s budget for 2015 has not yet been approved. Council continues to wait for the approval of a proposed special services levy from the Manitoba Municipal Board (MMB).

The City of Flin Flon’s budget for 2015 has not yet been approved.

Council continues to wait for the approval of a proposed special services levy from the Manitoba Municipal Board (MMB).

The budget, which is typically approved around May 15, is still pending, waiting approval of the levy – which, if approved, would raise taxes on lower-end homes and lower taxes on higher-end homes in Flin Flon.

City of Flin Flon treasurer Glenna Daschuk says the MMB has had the levy report for some time now. She expects to have a decision within the next two weeks.

The Reminder reported as far back as April that council had hoped to have a decision on the levy by the middle of June.

Now, almost two weeks into July, council continues to wait.

The delay in decision-making will affect capital projects such as road repairs and water and sewer projects within the city, as well as cash flow, said Daschuk.
