The Flin Flon Lions Club wants high school students to speak up. The club is holding a public speaking contest, called the Speak Off, next month for grade 11 and 12 students. "We thought we'd give it a try to see if the students are interested in taking a crack at public speaking," said contest chairman Ken Mansell. "We feel that public speaking is one of the most difficult things that everyone, not just young people, have to do. This will be a good way to get them started." Participants may choose their own topic on which to speak for between four and six minutes. Members of the Flin Flon Toastmasters Club will conduct the judging. "The Lions and Toastmasters will certainly be an easy crowd to speak in front of," commented Mansell. Prizes of $100, $50 and $25 are up for grabs, and the winner will be invited to attend an all-expenses paid trip to a Lions convention in February in Portage La Prairie, where he or she will compete against other Speak Off winners from across the district. Mansell sees the contest as a good way for the Lions to get connected with young people. The Speak Off is open to all grade 11 and 12 students of Hapnot Collegiate, Many Faces Education Centre, and Frontier Collegiate in Cranberry Portage. The Speak Off is slated for the first Flin Flon Lions Club meeting of the new year, January 14 in the Green Room of the Flin Flon Community Hall.
