Jonathon Naylor Editor After more than a decade of hoping and planning, the Flin Flon, Creighton and Area SPCA will open its new animal shelter and headquarters. The grand opening gets underway at 1:30 p.m. this Saturday, Sept. 29, with renowned animal advocate Rob Laidlaw as guest speaker. From Toronto, Laidlaw is a chartered biologist and author of children's books who has devoted over 30 years of his life to protecting animals. He is the founder of several animal protection organizations, including Zoocheck Canada, a wildlife protection group. Laidlaw's special interest in dogs has led him to visit shelters, pounds and rescue centres in North America, India, Thailand and Japan, as well as other countries. He regularly speaks to groups of all ages about animal issues and how individuals can empower themselves to make changes. In that vein, Laidlaw will host a presentation for children ages eight to 13 at the Elks Hall on Friday evening from 7-8:30 p.m. On Saturday, he will hold a presentation for adults, entitled Everyday Heroes, from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., also at the Elks Hall. Free Both the children's and adult sessions are free to attend. Laidlaw writes books to encourage both kids and adults to get involved in animal protection. His book No Shelter Here is about the challenges that dogs face around the world and how society can help dogs. The SPCA shelter is located off the Perimetre Highway beside the old museum site.
