Flin Flon Superintendent of Schools Blaine Veitch applauds the decision by Canadian beverage companies to pull carbonated beverages from many school vending machines. By September, the companies plan to offer only non-carbonated beverages, such as pure fruit juices, in vending machines based in elementary and junior high schools across the country. Veitch said the move is a positive step toward improving children's health, and feels it compliments the milk program at Flin Flon elementary schools in which milk is served to students for a nominal fee. Beverage manufacturers had been working with schools and school boards to ensure that healthier beverage choices would be available to all students, particularly those in elementary schools. The companies have vowed to ensure that, by September, at least half of the beverage selections offered in elementary and middle school vending machines will be water and 100 per cent fruit juices. The remaining selections will be a variety of other non-carbonated beverages such as juice and sports drinks. Carbonated beverages currently sold in the vending machines include soft drinks like Pepsi, Root Beer and 7 Up.
