City council "may have to take a real serious look" at the snowmobiling situation in Flin Flon amid apprehension about riders in areas frequented by children. That's Coun. Dave Law's feeling after hearing a second concern in just a few weeks about snowmobilers zipping along property where youngsters play. In a letter council reviewed last month, a worried mother wrote about snowmobilers traveling quickly down a sliding hill at Alder Ave. Park. At this week's meeting, held Tuesday, Coun. Law told his fellow councillors he has been approached by another resident with a similar concern. "I just wanted to bring it to council's attention that, possibly, there are more areas [of concern] in our community," said Coun. Law. Coun. Law added that the situation "might be something that we may have to take a real serious look at, and hopefully we can resolve something to the benefit of all parties." Flower baskets In another matter, council referred a request to attach temporary brackets to the light standards on Main Street. The Business Builders Association wants to hang decorative flower baskets from the brackets this summer. The association, an arm of the Flin Flon and District Chamber of Commerce, also asked the City to utilize its summer staff to water the flowers at regular intervals. "I don't personally see us having a problem with putting up the brackets," said Mayor Dennis Ballard, "... but having them watered at regular intervals is another matter." The mayor said he would be hesitant to add the watering to the summer staff's job description without first consulting the director of recreation. Coun. Bill Hanson said there would be more to watering the flowers than just "sending somebody down Main St. with a water can," noting they would need to carry a substantial amount of water and have a way of pumping it up a number feet to reach the baskets. Council referred the request to the Engineering Services Committee for further discussion and investigation. Here is a recap of other matters from the meeting: The final reading of a motion carried to disallow parking on a portion of Hudson St. between Ruth Betts School and Third Ave. The affected portion is on the west side of the street, the same side as the school. A motion carried to purchase a half-page ad in this year's Hapnot Collegiate yearbook for $140. A motion carried to donate $50 to the 73rd Annual Flin Flon Men's Bonspiel, which will take place March 18-20. A longtime Rotarian, Coun. Nazir Ahmad congratulated the Rotary Club movement on its 100th anniversary, which was commemorated yesterday. The Flin Flon branch of the club was incorporated in 1935 and has supported initiatives such as Rotary Court, Rotary Park and Camp Whitney. Council referred a request for a $500 sponsorship of the upcoming Manitoba Chambers of Commerce annual general meeting in Flin Flon. The Finance Committee will further discuss the matter.
