While City of Flin Flon officials keep close tabs on ATV-related complaints, any concerns over the improper use of snowmobiles won’t be overlooked this winter.
Mayor Cal Huntley says the city does not hear as many complaints related to snowmobiles as it does to ATVs and side-by-sides.
“But we still watch them as well,” he said, referring to snowmobiles.
Huntley said, for instance, that snowmobiles have been seen illegally travelling through parks in winters past.
He has also heard reports from two councillors of snowmobilers failing to wear the proper safety gear.
Speaking at this week’s city council meeting, Huntley pointed out that none of the rules around ATV, side-by-side and snowmobile within city limits have changed.
Council announced in May that operators of ATVs and side-by-sides have until May 2016 to prove they can drive responsibly within the community.
If not, council may consider prohibiting use of those vehicles within city limits. No similar ultimatum has been issued to snowmobilers.
Residents with questions around the bylaws governing off-road vehicle and snowmobile use in Flin Flon may contact city hall.
