Close to 50 people came out to a December 27 ceremony held to commemorate the renaming of the community of Snow Lake's library. The library, previously known only as the 'school library', was renamed the Dorothy Salahub Library. Those in attendance at this historic occasion included the late Mrs. Salahub's husband Bill, her four children Bill Jr., Doug, Cathy, and Ronald, as well as her granddaughter Christine, other family members and numerous close friends. The ceremony got underway shortly before 3:00 p.m. with the introduction of the family and delivery of a short history on the community's library, which was written by Dorothy Salahub herself. Following this, Lynore Spruyt, vice-principal of Frontier School Division's J.H. Kerr School, gave a heart warming and sometimes humorous account of her personal recollections during Mrs. Salahub's time in the library, and expressed her own as well as the division's respect and admiration at having the library named in her honour. After Mrs. Spruyt's address, Snow Lake Mayor Garry Zamzow was called upon to say a few words. Like Spruyt, Zamzow also knew Mrs. Salahub on a personal level and spoke from the heart in memorializing her and acknowledging her contributions to the community. Dorothy Salahub taught at Snow Lake's school from 1958 to 1960, and also substitute taught in the 1970s. She was Snow Lake's community librarian from early 1989 until retirement in January of 2000. See 'Served' P.# Con't from P.# Subsequent to this, she served as a board member on the Community Library Board until her passing on July 13, 2003 at the age of 67. In reply to the addresses by Zamzow and Spruyt, both Cathy and Doug Salahub took time to express the family's gratitude for the kind words and the honour bestowed on this day. Following this, the family cut the ribbon opening the library and Bill Salahub Sr. unveiled a plaque marking the occasion. The plaque was inscribed with the following: "In recognition of her love and respect for the written word and the knowledge it conveys. And for her many years of service, both as the community's Librarian and as a board member, this library shall hereafter be known as the Dorothy Salahub Library. December 27/2003". Once the applause subsided, those attending enjoyed coffee, dainties, and fellowship and were included as the first patrons to set foot within the confines of The Dorothy Salahub Library.
