Snow Lake will establish a community economic development office to assist in the creation of long-term business sustainability with funding from the province and other partners, Industry, Economic Development and Mines Minister Jim Rondeau has announced. "The Snow Lake community economic development office will help to tap local and regional strengths and opportunities for self-sustaining economic development. With the provision of supports such as detailed work plans, the office will play a significant role in sustaining the community," said Rondeau. "It is vital that we support northern mining communities in discovering new economic opportunities and assist them in developing sustainable ventures that will provide long-term benefits to the communities and make the most use of the unique resources available to each of them," said Agriculture, Food and Rural Initiatives Minister Rosann Wowchuk. Total funding for the project is $90,000 with $65,000 from the Province of Manitoba, $15,000 from New Britannia Mine and $10,000 from the Town of Snow Lake. The project will be led by an economic development officer and the office will open in the spring of 2005. Priority plans and projects for the town of 1,200 residents will be implemented within the following year. The need for a community economic development office was determined in May 2004 when High River Gold Mines Ltd. and Kinross Gold Corporation announced they would suspend development at New Britannia Mine. Kinross has since resumed development work at the mine.
