Many Manitobans probably won't notice the small decrease in income taxes that takes effect January 1. That's when the income tax rate for mid-income earners will drop to 14 per cent from 14.9 per cent. For a single person earning $40,000, the drop will mean an added $85 per year; for a family of four with two parents making a combined $60,000, it will mean an extra $43. Premier Gary Doer applauded the tax relief as sensible while critics like John Loewen, Tory finance critic, said it "is definitely not enough." The mid-income tax rate applies to Manitobans making between $30,544 and $65,000 per year. Doer promised the tax cut in last year's provincial budget.
