It’s just about time to shine up the skis and grab the poles.

The Flin Flon Ski Club will hold its open house on Nov. 19, starting at 11 a.m.

The open house will feature information sessions by long-time club members, filling in the public on the facilities, trails, events and programs. A Prince Albert-based company will be making the trek north to show attendees the latest gear for this year.

The club is hoping for a full season of skiing, unlike last winter. A perfect storm of unseasonably high temperatures and a heavy snow dump early in the season led to a short season for the club.

“With a good freeze, and snow starting to build up, it looks like an excellent start to the ski season,” said Dave Price, vice-president of the ski club.

Ski club members and volunteers have been preparing trails for the upcoming season since September. The club features more than 28 kilometres of trails in total, with some trails featuring LED lights for night skiing.

“We have widened and improved several sections on our trails over the summer,” said Dean Grove, ski club president.

Options are available for first-time skiers, including on-site ski rental and instruction by volunteers. The club’s Jackrabbits/Bunnyrabbits programs and the Nordic Racing Team provide instruction and competitive opportunity for young skiers.

Other programs, including biathlon, after school ski programs, pet friendly trails and guided trail tours will be discussed at the open house.

Also on the agenda is an interesting proposal for the ski club – two area residents have proposed building a disc golf course near the club’s chalet. The proposed course would intersect with some of the club’s trails.

“The ski club is totally in favour of planned development of the club as a multi-use facility that can be used by all sorts of fitness enthusiasts,” said Grove.
