The Saskatchewan government is pleased with the success of the Saskatchewan HealthLine, a toll-free, province-wide, 24-hour telephone health advice and information line. Over 65,000 people have made use of the service over the past year, and the province wants to ensure that all Saskatchewan people know that it's available. Through the service, registered nurses provide health information, and help people decide whether to visit a physician, make a trip to a hospital emergency room, or administer self-treatment right at home. Over the past year, the top three reasons people called were: fever in children aged three months to three years abdominal pain nausea/vomiting (children) Calls have been received from every health region in the province. Residents of the province have toll-free, around-the-clock access to HealthLine at 1-877-800-0002. In other health news, the Saskatchewan Prescription Drug Plan has added 37 new drug products to the list of those eligible for coverage. The additions include new drugs for use in the treatment of migraine headaches and for the management of HIV. The Saskatchewan Prescription Drug Plan currently covers about 3,500 products and assists about 114,000 families each year. In 2003-04, the Drug Plan paid $149.2 million in benefits. The benefits under the plan are targeted to people who need help the most. New drug products are added quarterly.
